A fellow copywriter friend of mine, Sarah Mitchell, sent me the following article regarding a tragic event that happened recently in New Zealand.
Upon reading the story, I was appalled by the sheer heartless reaction of the rental car company involved. (You’ll see what I mean when you read the piece yourself).
How anyone can be more focused on getting their money in the face of another person’s tragedy is unbelievable to me. I’m all for a business needing to get paid, but under extreme circumstances like this, I think exceptions need to be made in the name of sheer human decency and understanding.
The lesson here is this: There will always be an exception where you will need to make a decision based on your heart rather than on “the bottom line”. It’s not always about the rules or company policies. Sometimes you just have to do what is right. And in this case, this business owner made a very, VERY poor decision. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he lost a lot of business because of his callousness.
